Introduction to Volunteering Within SDUSD

San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) volunteering strategy (Vision 2030) highlights the involvement of parents, community members and the business community to be essential to their success and the success of its students. SDUSD very much encourages and wants families, community members and business partners to be involved in their local schools, now more than ever. And, highlights many ways for interested individuals and organizations to get involved, at both the school site and district level.​​

SDUSD has a number of mandatory procedures in place for school volunteer programs. These procedures provide students with a safe environment and allow for a variety of opportunities for volunteering. Our school volunteering program is governed by these procedures and, all volunteers at LJES must complete all mandatory screening requirements. 

For every school in the SDUSD, volunteer participation is classified into four categories. And, depending on the category, certain screening processes must be completed by district staff prior to volunteering. Every volunteer at LJES has mandatory volunteers to complete.

Flexible Opportunities

SDUSD has a variety of volunteer opportunities for parents and guardians. Your volunteer work is at your own schedule and pace, just be transparent and clear about this at the outset.

Build Community

Get involved in our VIP Volunteers, Room Parents, committee volunteers, and friends of the school, office and class volunteers, to name just a few roles open to you.

The Success of LJES PTO Depends Upon Our Parent Volunteers

That leads directly to success for all our school’s classroom activities.

In LJES Elementary, we have a variety of volunteer opportunities for parents and guardians throughout the year that involve ways to get involved with your VIP Volunteers, Room Parents, and committee volunteers, just as some examples. You may be interested in “Out VIP Volunteers” Bulletin Board located in the courtyard near the main office and near the volunteer center.

Opportunities at the district level include, but are not limited to the following:

Volunteer Approval Process

To volunteer with San Diego Unified School District, you must complete an annual application, valid until June 30th, and undergo the Volunteer Code of Conduct, and provide TB clearance or X-ray (valid 4 years), which can be at the school office or volunteer center.

Complete Initial Application and Screening

  • Volunteer Application: Fill out and submit the annual School Volunteer Application
  • Volunteer Code of Conduct: Read and sign the Volunteer Code of Conduct
  • TB Clearance (TB test/chest x-ray): Present TB test document form (valid 4 years) or present copy of X-ray assessment
  • ID Verification: Provide a government-issued photo ID to the school office

Complete Additional Requirements for Specific Roles

  • Fingerprint Clearance: At the district office, you will need to undergo a background check and submit fingerprints for both state and national clearance
  • Additional Forms: If your volunteer role has you off-campus, you will need to complete a transportation form

Get Cleared by the School

  • Approval Process: The school and district will process all required documentation, which can take several weeks
  • Once Approved: You contact where your volunteer assignment ends, your receive official notification from the school's volunteer coordinator that you are approved to begin volunteering
  • Sign In/Out: Make sure you sign in at the front office and wear a volunteer badge for the duration of your visit
